Here’s a quick and easy test to see if your new garage door is as safe as it should be.
1) Open your garage door and place a new paper towel roll under the door.
2) Step back and use your remote to close the door.
3) Observe what happens to the paper towels.
To pass the test, your garage door should not crush the middle cardboard roll. Some tests will have you use other objects like a 2 by 4 wood block. This also works well, but only for testing the reversing mechanism. You also want to test how much force or pressure is exerted before the door reverses. A paper towel roll serves as a good object for this measurement.
If your door does not reverse or crushes the roll of towels, then it is not safe for operation and you should immediately contact a garage door repair service for help.
