How to Protect Yourself from Contractor Fraud

As much as we’d like to think our government and law enforcement will protect us from fraudulent businesses, the truth is that there’s plenty of fraudulent contractors out there looking to make a quick buck or two off innocent customers. In fact, earlier in May, a businessman in Sacramento was convicted of fraud.

If you’re in need of garage door repair but don’t want to get scammed, here’s 3 helpful tips for avoiding contractor scams:

1) Check Reviews

It’s always a good idea to make sure there are no bad reviews for the repair company you’re planning to hire. Try checking for reviews on Yelp, Google, and Facebook.

2) Are they Insured and Bonded?

When a company is insured and bonded, it shows they that they take their business seriously. Insurance and bonding help protect you, the customer, in case something goes wrong with the repair. Try calling them and asking for their insurance and bond license numbers. A reputable company would happily provide this information to you.

3) Watch Out for Unmarked Cars

Not having a logo on the company vehicle doesn’t mean their fraudulent but it should raise some questions. Ideally, your technician should arrive in a marked vehicle and be dressed in appropriate attire.
