Keep These 4 Things Out of Your Garage

If you’re like most homeowners, you probably store a bit too many things in your garage. While the garage can be a great place to store your holiday lawn decorations or vehicle, there are a few things that don’t belong in a garage. Here’s 4 of them:

1) Propane

We’re sure homeowners across Yuba City are getting ready to fire up their grill for the hot California summertime here. But if you buy an extra propane tank, be sure not to store it in your garage. If your garage gets hot, it could cause your propane tank to leak. This often leads to dangerous propane tank explosions that could level your entire home. Make sure to store extra tanks in a shed or somewhere that’s not in or attached to your home.

2) Flammable Chemicals

Cleaning liquids and other flammable chemicals seem like they would belong in the garage, but these items are best reserved for an outside shed. If you have a garage fire, flammable chemicals will make it worse.

3) Valuables & Important Paperwork

Whether you have a valuable stack of baseball cards or an important painting, collectibles don’t belong in the garage. Fluctuating temperature and humidity levels will wreak havoc on sensitive objects.

4) Fridge

When some families buy a new fridge, their old one gets placed in the garage for additional space. This seems like a great idea in theory – having a backup fridge for when you’ve bought too many groceries. If you have adequate garage door insulation and your garage stays cool, this can work. But since most garages run hot, your fridge will have to work extra hard to keep the temperature cool. This can result in a shockingly large energy bill.

While these are only a few things you shouldn’t leave in the garage, there’s plenty of other things that don’t belong in there. If you own a garage, make sure to keep it organized and clean!
